    House Style Notes

Second Colonial Revival    Bungalow

An interesting treatment of the American Second Colonial Revival, this home's single rectangular mass adorned with symmetrical facade openings and edited Adam-style entry in Doric order establishes its primary colonial influence. The shallow hipped roof might be traced back to an Adam-era practice of employing a very shallow roof to suggest a flat roof. However, the pitch of this roof is not quite so shallow as those of the 19th-century and may reflect the more common and popular use of shallow roof pitches employed in bungalows influenced variously by the Arts & Crafts and Prairie-styled architecture of the 20th century. The original window treatment (removed after 2002) departed somewhat from the classic American Colonial with its use of 3-rank casements with large center windows on the 1st story and a 6-lite muntin pattern more likely seen in bungalows of Arts & Crafts influence. The classic American Colonial Revival home typically had double-hung windows sometimes in pairs or 3-ranks with sidelights or transoms often with decorative glass, shape, or muntins. The windows installed after 2002 use a more traditional hung sash with simple muntin patterns. The 8-over-8 on the 2nd story can be found in historical examples but the 4-over-4 is atypical and may simply reflect the original windows' dimension constraints. The current faux muntins inside contemporary dual-paned glass give short-shrift to the original muntin thicknesses that were signature to Adam and Georgian precedents of the colonial. Variants from the classic aside, this home's tidy composition with window boxes adds to a short list of homes in Palm Haven of either formal symmetry or American Colonial origin.
